It might not be the size of Minecraft, but Terraria has done very well for itself following in the phenomenon’s shadow. Re-Logic retooled the building system found in Minecraft and set it to the background of a 2D platformer with excellent boss fights and a generic hero who I will always think is Bartz from Final Fantasy V.
The result of this combination is a respectable 20 million copies since the game first launched in 2012. Re-Logic confirmed in a press release that the mark was hit in 2016.
The entire team would like to say a massive THANK YOU to all of you for making all of this possible. It has been a pleasure to have all of you along on the journey thus far, and we are really looking forward to continuing down that path. Terraria is a game — and a franchise — that has so much life left in it, and we cannot wait to share those plans with you in the months and years to come.
Available on almost every platform ever
Re-Logic didn’t overlook the fact that its game’s success can be pointed to it being available on every platform thanks to its partnership with 505 Games. To date, it has been available on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation Vita, iOS, Android, Amazon Fire TV, Windows Phone, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Mac, Linux, Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.
We’ve yet to get confirmation of a Switch version… but seriously, it’s going to happen.
